How To Install Trisquel 9.0 Etiona

By | November 11, 2020
This
tutorial explains step by step to have your computer with Trisquel
9.0
. Don’t worry this is intended for beginners so everyone can
try. You will prepare at least two disk partitions and going through
about twenty minutes to finish it. For your information, different to
Ubuntu, Trisquel supports 32 bit as well as 64 bit computers and I
encourage fellow Lenovo ThinkPad owners to try it happily. You can
practice this guide either normally, in dualboot mode, bios legacy and uefi, or into
external storage device. Last but not least, you can also do this
inside a virtual machine like AQEMU. Now let’s go!

Preparations

  1. Download Trisquel. Choose 32 bit edition if your computer is sold before 2011, or choose 64 bit instead if your computer either has 4GB RAM or comes with Windows 10.
  2. Create Trisquel bootable USB flash drive, a medium to install the OS into your computer, by writing the ISO file into it. For this purpose, you can use Unetbootin program on Windows and Mac, or GNOME Disk Utility which is preinstalled built-in on most GNU/Linux.
  3. Create 3 hard disk partitions by size and filesystem respectively, 500MB FAT32 and 1GB linux-swap and >=20GB EXT4 which will be EFI, SWAP, and ROOT partitions respectively. For this purpose you can use GParted Partition Editor program which is preinstalled built-in on Trisquel itself and almost all other GNU/Linux distros.
  4. If you plan a dualboot, backup your important data from Windows partitions to external storage correctly.
  5. If you plan USB flash drive instead of hard disk drive installation, I recommend you to use EXT2 instead of EXT4 filesystem.
  6. For complete beginners, ask person with computer knowledge near you to guide you while practicing this tutorial and doing mentioned backup.

Booting

Plug your bootable USB in and boot your computer up into USB.

When
your computer boots up, you should eventually see Trisquel 9.0 screen
giving you options either to TRY or to INSTALL. Use arrow key up and
down to select and press Enter to go. Select ‘Try Trisquel without
installing
‘. Continued below.

Now you landed into its beautiful desktop, either you access GParted here, or you immediately go to the installation process if you are ready. If you already have the required partitions, find on desktop an item Install Trisquel, double click it and the installation starts.

(Advantage of choosing TRY instead of INSTALL is that you can run other programs before doing the actual installation, like browsing your files and partitioning)
